Lesson 8: Let’s apply split/jump strategy to subtract

Students will explore jump and split strategy to solve subtraction problems, building on their understanding and enhancing their subtraction skills. They will apply their skills to help customers calculate change at a yard sale.

Lesson 7: Let’s use jump and split strategy to subtract

Students will be asked to investigate how they could use their knowledge of jump and split strategy and apply it to subtraction. They will then have the opportunity to refine and apply this strategy with a problem-solving activity that involves finding the missing amounts from each animal’s story.

Lesson 6: Let’s explore related facts

Students will delve into the relationship between addition and subtraction through inverse operations and related facts, highlighting how addition can be effectively used to solve subtraction problems. They will build fact family houses using picture prompts.

Lesson 5: Let’s use patterns to subtract

This lesson will explore the relationships between numbers and how understanding these patterns can empower students to subtract with greater efficiency. They will ‘go shopping’ to practice their skills.

Lesson 4: Let’s bridge down to the next ten

This lesson reviews the “bridging to the next 10” strategy for addition and introduces its application in subtraction. Students will learn how to use this strategy to make subtraction more efficient and develop a deeper understanding of number relationships. The will use a game, called Risk It For The Biscuit, to consolidate their learning.

Lesson 3: Let’s use counting on to subtract

Students will use the counting-on strategy to approach subtraction, where they start from the smaller number and count on to reach the larger number. This method helps students to build a deeper understanding of subtraction and develop stronger number sense. Students will play Strategic Subtraction, a fun card flipping game.

Lesson 2: Let’s add and subtract 1, 10 and 100

Students will explore how to add and subtract 1, 10 and 100 using place value knowledge and number patterns. They will develop a strong understanding of how each digit changes, building fluency and number sense.

Lesson 1: Let’s subtract within 10

This lesson revisits number bonds to 10 and applies the concept to subtraction. Students will engage in an exciting game, called Subtraction Pyramid.

Lesson 15: Let’s show what we know!

Students will show their knowledge of all the key ideas from this addition unit. Please note, you can either complete an onscreen assessment or a printed version of the assessment.

Lesson 14: Let’s use our addition strategies

We will use our addition strategies to plan and find the total cost of the ultimate holiday. We could practice different strategies, such as number bonds, bridging to ten, doubles and near doubles, jump strategy, split strategy and column method.
