Lesson 4: Let’s compare numbers
Students will build on our place value knowledge by comparing large numbers. They will also learn how to use the <> symbols to write number statements about numbers. Students will play a game called Risk It For The Biscuit.
Lesson 3: Let’s apply expanded form
Students will apply their expanding number skills from the previous lesson whilst playing Place Value Pointers, a fun number and points game.
Lesson 2: Let’s expand numbers
Students will explore the value of digits by expanding large numbers and creating expanded form creatures.
Lesson 9: Let’s explore column method with regrouping
Students will recap the connection between each place value column and conceptually explore regrouping with visuals. They will use this knowledge to use column addition with regrouping and apply the strategy to visit a fun fair and choose rides.
Lesson 1: Let’s make place value connections
Students will recap place value columns and the amount they represent. They will explore and recap the place value system through a fun game called Place Value Bananza.
Lesson 8: Let’s apply mental strategies to subtract
Students will apply their mental subtraction skills to play a game called Ducks in a Row.
Lesson 7: Let’s use jump/split strategy to subtract mentally
Students will explore how they could use their knowledge of jump and split strategy addition and investigate how it can be used to subtract. They will refine and apply the strategies to plan a day at a waterpark.
Lesson 6: Let’s bridge down to the next ten to subtract
This lesson uses the skills acquired in the bridging to the nearest 10 addition lessons and applies it to subtraction. Students will play a game, called Stick or Twist, to practise subtracting down to the nearest 10.
Lesson 5: Let’s explore jump and split strategy
Jump and split are mental strategies used to manipulate and solve addition problems effectively. Students will break down the smaller number into smaller chunks, then add each chunk to the larger number. They will choose chores for animals to complete, so they can accomplish their goal.
Lesson 4: Let’s count on and find number complements to 100
Students will use their number bond knowledge, and addition and subtraction knowledge, to explore number complements to 100. Number complements are numbers that go together to make 10, 100, 200, 1,000. Students will look for the complements that are hidden in pictures.
