Lesson 12: Measurement Assessment

This is a summative assessment that covers the key objectives from this measurement unit.
Lesson 11: Metric Olympics!

Students will recap and apply the different units of measurement that they have explored during this unit. They will complete a Metric Olympics in this lesson.
Lesson 5: Using jump and split strategy to subtract mentally

Students will apply jump and split strategy skills to subtract mentally. They will use their skills to solve power grid investigation questions.
Lesson 10: Solving measurement word problems

Students will use their problem-solving skills to solve word problems that connect to length/distance, liquid volume and mass.
Lesson 4: Using rounding and mental strategies to problem-solve

Students will use rounding and mental strategies to problem-solve and find the items that each animal purchased.
Lesson 3: Introduction to compensation strategy

Compensation strategy involves rounding one number to make the number sentence easier to add. The amount rounded is then either added or subtracted afterwards to compensate. Students will gain further skills and understanding on number flexibility and how to manipulate numbers to solve problems effectively. They will play a game called Hit or Miss.
Lesson 9: Introduction to mass

Students will read mass measurement scales and convert kilograms to grams and vice versa using multiplication and division. They will explore mass by weighing objects in their classroom.
Lesson 2: Adding using bump strategy

Bump strategy is a strategy that manipulates an addition problem by adjusting one of the amounts to a round number, then doing the opposite to the other number to create an amount equal to the original number sentence. Students will play a game called Play Bump ‘n Battle.
Lesson 1: Explore mental addition strategies

This lesson explores mental addition strategies used by students. You could use this lesson as a pre-assessment to see students’ overall understanding of addition and how they apply their number sense. Note, while students might use a variety of strategies (we encourage this!) we specifically model jump and split strategy addition. Students will order ice […]
Lesson 8: Introduction to capacity/volume

Students will read measuring cylinders and explore capacity/volume. They will convert between millilitres and litres using division and multiplication. Students will explore the capacity/volume of containers in your classroom using measuring cylinders.
