Lesson 8: Consolidating writing numbers in written form

Students will apply their understanding of reading and writing numbers in number form and word form in order to create a birthday wish list.

Lesson 4: Comparing numbers

Students will apply knowledge gained during the ‘Expanding Numbers’ lessons in order to compare the value of numbers. Students will compare the prices of items in two different shops and explain their thinking.
Lesson 3: Apply understanding of expanded numbers

Students will expand numbers and explore the value of each digit. Students will be exposed to the visual representation of each digit to gain an understanding of the difference in value between place values. They will get creative whilst making expanded form creatures!
Lesson 1: Recapping place value and expanding numbers

Students will recap their place value knowledge and identify the value of the digits in a number. They will expand numbers whilst playing Expandables, a fun points game that also involves adding.
Lesson 2: Writing numbers in expanded form (partitioning)

Students will learn to write and draw number in expanded form by identifying the value of each digit in a number. Students will be exposed the visual representation of each digit to gain an understanding of the difference in value between place values. They will then complete an activity that involves creating and expanding numbers.

This is an introduction to the place value system. Students will build and model numbers, whilst using place value blocks and place value tables to represent numbers and explore the value of digits. In this lesson students will use place value blocks and drawings to represent numbers.
