Lesson 17: Using strategies to problem-solve
Students will use a range of addition and subtraction strategies to problem-solve. Students will use their critical-thinking skills to solve clues and find the ages of the sharks in a family tree.
Lesson 16: Solving word problems
Students will use a range of strategies and REPS to solve word problems. Students will take part in ‘silly’ challenges while solving their word problems.
Lesson 15: Investigation using addition and subtraction with decimals
Students will investigate change using addition and subtraction with decimals. They will investigate which items each shopper could have purchased based on clues.
Lesson 14: Introduction to subtracting decimals using column subtraction
Using place value blocks, students will gain a conceptual understanding of how decimals are regrouped using column method to subtract. They will then use this knowledge to subtract using digits while making purchases in order to create a home aquarium.
Lesson 13: Use column method to subtract multi-digit numbers
In this lesson, students will gain a strong conceptual understanding of how regrouping is used in column method subtraction. Students will use their knowledge to calculate credit card debt.
Lesson 12: Using REPS to apply problem-solving skills
Students will use REPS to problem-solve. They will answer critical-thinking questions about earning pocket money.
Lesson 11: Use column method to investigate adding decimals
Students will use their critical-thinking skills and column method to solve the ‘funky float’ challenges.
Lesson 10: Introduction to adding decimals
Students will explore the connection between ones, tenths and hundredths. It also shows the link to different currencies. They will use this knowledge to gain a conceptual understanding of adding decimals with regrouping using column method. They will practice the strategy by playing a game called In The Money.
Lesson 8: Applying subtraction strategies in a game
Students will apply their mental subtraction strategy skills to play a game called Zero’s Hero.
Lesson 7: Introduction to subtraction compensation strategy
Students will use their compensation knowledge and apply it to subtraction. They will use their compensation skills to interpret biologists’ observations.
