Step 3: Start lesson 1 and have a look around

Students will apply the skills from the previous lesson to subtract using bump strategy during this lesson. They will complete an activity that involves finding different animals’ power numbers.

Students will apply their knowledge of bump strategy addition and subtraction while playing a game called Stock Market Mania.

Students will apply their split strategy knowledge to add decimal amounts and problem-solve. They will use the strategy to help animals choose what to pack based on their suitcase weight limit.

Students will apply split strategy to subtract decimals that include tenths while playing a game called Race To Nothing.

Compensation strategy involves rounding one number to make the number sentence easier to add. The amount rounded is either added or subtracted afterwards to compensate. They will use compensation strategy to add decimals and find the winner of the Swim Fest competition.

Students will use their knowledge of compensation strategy to subtract whilst playing a game called Bagsie.

Students will gain a conceptual understanding of adding decimals up to hundredths using column method to help find the musicians’ earnings.

Through place value blocks, students will gain a conceptual understanding of how decimals are regrouped when subtracting using column method. They will then use this knowledge to subtract different amounts of time.

Students will play a game of chance, called Money Bags, in which we will earn and lose money. They will use a variety of strategies, such as jump, split, compensation and column method to add and subtract.

Students will use their rounding and estimating skills to budget and plan the ultimate room.

Students will investigate purchases and change and answer problem-solving questions that connect to different animals’ Yes Day spendings.

Students will use various addition and subtraction strategies and REPS strategy to effectively solve word problems and solve clues. They will follow the clues to find where Freddy has gone.

Students will use addition and subtraction strategies and problem-solving skills to solve puzzles and ‘escape the room’.

Students will show their knowledge of all the key ideas from this addition and subtraction unit. Please note, you can either complete an onscreen assessment or a printed version of the assessment.
