Step 3: Start lesson 1 and have a look around
Students will explore the value of digits by expanding large numbers and creating expanded form creatures.
Students will apply their expanding number skills from the previous lesson whilst playing Place Value Pointers, a fun number and points game.
Students will build on our place value knowledge by comparing large numbers. They will also learn how to use the <> symbols to write number statements about numbers. Students will play a game called Risk It For The Biscuit.
Students will practice writing large numbers in written form correctly. They will also learn when to use hyphens/commas using the ‘hotel’ technique for support.
Students will use a number line to round numbers to the nearest 10, the nearest 100 and the nearest 1,000.
Students will continue to develop their rounding skills. They will round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand. They will play a fun game called Risky Rounding
Students will explore the value of tenths and hundredths and their connections. They will also order decimal numbers and write them in words. Students will use their knowledge to put the animals’ race results in order.
Students will continue to explore decimals. In this lesson, they will use thousandths, along with tenths and hundredths. They will explore the connection between each of the decimal place value columns, reading decimals as words and ordering decimals. Students will judge a space jumping competition.
Students will explore rounding decimals to the nearest whole number by using a number line. They will play a game called Peas in a Pod.
Students will consolidate their place value knowledge and use critical thinking skills to solve a series of place value puzzles. They will apply their knowledge of expanding, rounding, regrouping, comparing and writing whole numbers and decimals.
