Step 3: Start lesson 1 and have a look around
Students will use grid method to multiply. This involves splitting the number up into smaller amounts using a grid as a guide. The smaller products are then added at the end to find the final answer. Students will practice this strategy by calculating customers’ total spendings at a sports store.
Students will continue to explore and apply their grid method knowledge. They will use their problem-solving skills to solve multiplication pyramid puzzles.
Students will be introduced to partial product strategy and use it to find the fiction lifespans of the animals they create.
Students will apply their partial product knowledge to help the animals plan for their holidays.
Students will use short multiplication to multiply multi-digit numbers. They will play a game called Multiplication Sanctuary to practice using short multiplication.
Students will apply their knowledge of short multiplication to play a strategy game called Strike Out.
Students will apply the strategies covered in this unit and REPS to solve multiplication word problems and catch a ‘Cat Coat Criminal’.
Students will use jump strategy to divide 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Jump strategy involves using a number line to repeatedly add groups of the divisor to find out how many groups ‘fit inside’ the dividend. Students use this amount to find the quotient. They will use jump strategy to help organise a sports camp.
Students will apply their understanding of jump strategy to divide by playing a game called Blockbuster.
Students will learn how to use chunking strategy to solve division problems and calculate how many items each spaceship crew member will receive.
Students will apply their knowledge of chunking strategy with a fun scenario based division game. They will play a game called Planet Power to practice using chunking strategy.
Students will use patterns and critical thinking skills to identify and explore divisibility rules.
Students will divide large numbers using long division and use their problem-solving skills to help Winnie find how many sandwiches she needs to make.
Students will apply long division to solve 3-digit and 4-digit division problems. They will play a game called Jewel Joust to practice long division.
Students will use multiplication and division strategies and REPS to solve 1-step and multi-step word problems. Students will use their answers to solve clues and find a prize winner.
Students will apply a range of multiplication and division strategies, along with other operations to problem-solve. They will investigate the cost of letters on door hangers.
