Bump strategy is a strategy that manipulates an addition problem by adjusting one of the amounts to a round number, then doing the opposite to the other number to create an amount equal to the original number sentence. Students will play a game called ‘In the Zone’.

Compensation strategy involves rounding one number to make the number sentence easier to add. The amount rounded is either added or subtracted afterwards to compensate. Students will gain further skills and understanding on number flexibility and how to manipulate numbers to solve problems effectively. They will play a game called Boom Chaka-Laka

Students will use rounding and mental strategies to problem-solve and find the items that each animal purchased.

Students will apply jump and split strategy skills to subtract mentally. They will use our skills to solve power grid investigation questions.

Students will use bump strategy to subtract while solving subtraction maze puzzles.

Students will apply their subtraction strategy skills to play a game called Zero’s Hero.

Students will revise and apply column method addition with multi-digit numbers. They will use their knowledge to play a game called Race to the Top.

Students will explore the connection between ones, tenths and hundredths. They will use this knowledge to gain a conceptual understanding of adding decimals with regrouping using column method. Students will practice by playing a game called In The Money.

Students will use their critical-thinking skills and column method to solve the ‘funky float’ challenges.

Students will use REPS to answer critical-thinking questions about earning pocket money.

In this lesson, students will gain a strong conceptual understanding of how regrouping is used in column method subtraction. They will use their knowledge to calculate credit card debt.

Students will gain a conceptual understanding of how decimals are regrouped using column method to subtract. They will use this knowledge to subtract using digits while making purchases in order to create a home aquarium.

Students will investigate change using addition and subtraction with decimals. They will investigate which items each shopper could have purchased based on clues.

Students will use a range of strategies and REPS to solve word problems. They will take part in ‘silly’ challenges while solving their word problems.
