Step 3: Start lesson 1 and have a look around
Students will use their number bond knowledge along with other strategies, such as doubles and near doubles, to find ‘number buddies’, which are numbers that are easier to add together than others. Students will play a game called Number Buddies.
Bridging to the next ten strategy involves adding a number in parts to another number to get to the next multiple of ten. Students will utilize bridging to the next ten to help develop their mental math skills. Students will play Stick or Twist to practice this strategy.
Students will use their number bond knowledge, and addition and subtraction knowledge, to explore number complements to 100. Number complements are numbers that go together to make 10, 100, 200, 1,000. Students will look for the complements that are hidden in pictures.
Jump and split are mental strategies used to manipulate and solve addition problems effectively. Students will break down the smaller number into smaller chunks, then add each chunk to the larger number. They will choose chores for animals to complete, so they can accomplish their goal.
This lesson uses the skills acquired in the bridging to the nearest 10 addition lessons and applies it to subtraction. Students will play a game, called Stick or Twist, to practise subtracting down to the nearest 10.
Students will explore how they could use their knowledge of jump and split strategy addition and investigate how it can be used to subtract. They will refine and apply the strategies to plan a day at a waterpark.
Students will apply their mental subtraction skills to play a game called Ducks in a Row.
Students will recap the connection between each place value column and conceptually explore regrouping with visuals. They will use this knowledge to use column addition with regrouping and apply the strategy to visit a fun fair and choose rides.
Students will use rounding, column addition and their problem-solving skills to calculate coin totals and unlock the pirate treasure chests.
Students will use addition strategies to solve challenges and add 3 amounts. This lesson involves problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to complete different challenges.
Students will explore using column method to subtract. They will solve problems involving animals’ lap totals.
Students will use a variety of subtraction strategies to make restaurant orders and find the correct change.
Students will focus on subtracting strategically in order to play the game Bang on Zero.
Students will play a game of chance, called Money Bags, in which they will earn and lose money. They will use a variety of strategies, such as jump, split, compensation and column method to add and subtract.
Students will apply addition/subtraction strategies and the REPS strategy to effectively solve word problems. They will complete a code cracker in order to find the answer to a joke.
Students will use strategies from this unit to solve different problem-solving addition and subtraction puzzles and ‘escape the room’.
