Step 3: Start lesson 1 and have a look around

This lesson uses visual representations of each digit to conceptually show the difference in value between place value columns. Students will expand numbers and explore the value of each digit. They will make place value creatures with their expanded amounts.

Students will expand numbers to explore the value of each digit. The lesson will continue with visual representations of the difference in value between place values. Students will be on the hunt for a ‘portal key’ to help them ‘escape the desert’!

Students will explore how they can compare large numbers using our place value knowledge. They will use this knowledge to compare the total amount of exercises each animal has completed.

This lesson builds on the ‘Compare Numbers’ lesson. Students will compare and order large numbers. Students will order animal athlete’s results.

Students will use their comparing and ordering number skills to problem solve and find the largest and smallest combinations of digits. They will complete a snowball challenge!

Students will explore how to correctly read and write large numbers. They will use number hotels to read numbers.

This lesson will continue to explore reading and writing large numbers correctly. Students will create a wish list!

Students will build numbers that match specific criteria for each place value. They will use our place value knowledge and problem-solving skills in this lesson.

Through visuals, this lesson will explore how each place value column is 10x greater than the last. Students will use this knowledge to regroup amounts. They will find the mystery number that each animal has made with their blocks.

Students will apply their new regrouping knowledge to play ‘Super Scooper’, a fun trading game that involves regrouping amounts using place value.

Students will explore the concept of rounding and begin rounding to the nearest 10 using a number line strategy. They will use this knowledge to create random numbers and round them to the nearest 10.

This lesson continues to explore the concept of rounding to the nearest 10 using a number line. Students will play a fun game called Block Buster.

Students will continue to use the number line strategy to round to the nearest 100. They will round sand castle competition amounts.

Students will apply their knowledge of rounding numbers to the nearest hundred to play a fun game called Fruit Salad Scramble.

Students will consolidate their place value knowledge and use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to complete number puzzles/riddles.

Students will show their knowledge of all the key ideas from this place value unit. Please note, you can either complete an onscreen assessment or a printed version of the assessment.
