Lesson 9: Apply chunking strategy

Students will apply their knowledge of chunking strategy with a fun scenario based division game. They will play a game called Planet Power to practice using chunking strategy.

Lesson 8: Use chunking strategy to divide large numbers

Students will use chunking strategy to solve division. Chunking strategy involves repeatedly subtracting the divisor from the dividend to find the quotient. They will use their knowledge to calculate how many items each spaceship crew member will receive.

Lesson 6: Dividing using jump strategy

Students will use jump strategy to divide 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Jump strategy involves using a number line to repeatedly add groups of the divisor to find out how many groups ‘fit inside’ the dividend. Students use this amount to find the quotient. They will use jump strategy to help organise a sports camp.

Lesson 5: Dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000

Students will use their knowledge of dividing by 10 and 100 and apply it to also dividing by 1,000. They will compare their quotients during a fun division game called Raft of Otters.

Lesson 4: Dividing by 10 and 100

Students will use place value knowledge, along with multiplication connections, to divide by 10 or 100. They will play a multiplication game called Herd ’em Up.

Lesson 2: Identifying remainders

This lesson will review division vocabulary and explore the concept of remainders. They will explore remainders by playing a game called Lucky Leftovers.
